Summer Sports Camps and Enrichment Programs

Salesian College Preparatory offers a variety of Red & Black Summer Sports Camps and Enrichment Programs for 4th - 8th graders. All camps and programs will be run "rain or shine."

Red & Black Sports Camps

Our co-ed sports camps run from June through July, 9am - 3pm. All sport camps are $175 per week and include a camp t-shirt. Chess Wizards is $240. Campers should bring a bag lunch, water bottle, and sunscreen (if applicable). Camps are for 4th - 8th graders.

Boys and Girls Club $25.00

The Salesian Boys and Girls Club is offering extended care from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm for any student who attends one of our enrichment camps. The Salesian Boys and Girls Club is located directly behind our school building and the cost is only $25.00 for the entire week of camp. The Boys and Girls Club has an art room, computer lab, game room and full basketball court. It's a great way to have fun and make new friends. This is an optional add-on.

Basketball Camps

Session I: June 19—23; Session II: June 26—30; Session III: July 10—14; Session IV: July 17--21, 2017

Cost: $175.00 per session.

The Red and Black Basketball Camps are led by Salesian Boys' Basketball Head Coach and former California Coach of the Year, Bill Mellis.

The Red and Black Basketball Camps provide outstanding instruction, including individual fundamentals and team play and building confidence through drills and team play for boys and girls.

  • Offensive and defensive drills will be introduced.
  • Free Throw and Hot Shot Competitions will be organized.
  • 5 on 5 Team Competitions will occur, as well as 3 on 3 competitions.

Academic and personal goal setting will be discussed and a guest speaker will make a presentation. This camp is designed to make each athlete a better basketball player in a fun environment where campers can make new friends.

Campers should bring: Water bottle and a bag lunch.

Chess Wizards

July 17 - 22, 2017

9am - 3pm

Cost: $240.00

Chess Wizards offers fun, intellectual and challenging chess education and tournament experiences to children of all abilities and ages. Chess Wizards imparts the many benefits of learning chess-such as critical thinking, sportsmanship, and learning from our mistakes in a challenging and exciting way.

Classes and lessons are based around our original, fun, and high-energy Chess Wizards curriculum. Regardless of a child's ability Chess Wizards makes chess fun for all! To learn more please visit them at Students should bring a bagged lunch.

Tennis Camp

June 26 - 30, 2017

Cost: $175.00 per session.

The Red and Black Tennis Camp will be led by the Salesian Boys and Girls Tennis Coach Gary Hazard and will emphasize the fundamentals of tennis:

  • Footwork
  • Proper Grips
  • Serves
  • Strokes
  • Volleys

While developing a love for the game, athletes will learn the rules and etiquette that help make tennis a lifelong game. Indicate on the camp application whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced player.

Campers should bring: Tennis shoes, a tennis racket, and appropriate clothing for the week. They should also bring a sunscreen, water bottle and a bag lunch.

Volleyball Camp

July 24 - 28, 2017

Cost: $175.00 per session.

The Red and Black Volleyball Camp will be led by Salesian Varsity Girls Volleyball Coach Denise Hoh and will consist of several stations and drills:

  • Blocking – Footwork and technique
  • Digging – Form and technique
  • Passing – Form and technique
  • Serving – Form and technique
  • Setting – Form and technique

Fun relays will be included throughout the week, as well as a player evaluation of appropriate team position based on ability. A tournament will occur on the last day of the camp.

Campers should bring: Knee pads, tennis shoes, athletic shorts or spandex, water bottle and a bag lunch.

Enrichment Programs

Our enrichment programs are offered at different times throughout the summer. Enrichment programs are for 4th - 8th graders.

Let's Eat!

Session 1: July 17- 21, in the Cafeteria

Session 2: July 24 - 28, in the Cafeteria

Time: 9am - 1pm

Cost: $200.00

This one-week introductory cooking course will focus on basic skills needed for students in 5-8th grade to learn how to cook simple and easy meals. Each day will focus on particular skills and recipes. A variety of food types and styles from various cultures will be featured. There will be plenty of hands on experiences and, of course, we will eat the product of all our work.

About the Teacher:

Mr. Adrian Mison Fulay has been teaching for over 20 years. He loves to travel and cook - he’s taken several cooking classes in different countries. His favorite things to cook, and eat, are Italian and Chinese food.

Class size is limited to 15 students and is for 5th - 8th graders.

Outdoor Adventures Program

June 19 - 23, 2017

On the 1st day, students should sign-in on the 2nd floor of the main school building in classroom 209.

Cost: $250

Middle school students have a unique opportunity to learn about the outdoors in fun, safe and exciting ways, including making their own "outdoor" lunches. Salesian student alumni will be on hand to help lead program activities. Enjoy hiking, rock climbing, biking, kayaking, swimming and beach exploration in this outdoor adventure program.

About the Teacher:

Dr. Elizabeth Coscia is an outdoor enthusiast who has been teaching biology and environmental science at Salesian for 8 years. She is the club moderator for the Salesian Hiking Club and she has traveled with her students on exciting science-focused adventures to Costa Rica, Florida, and most recently, Iceland.

Music and Art

June 26- 30, 2017

Cost: $200.00

Art: Professional Children's Illustrator Ms. Tory DeOrian is hosting a workshop for students on Storytelling and Character Illustration. In this week-long workshop, students will learn about line and shape, story development , character design, and landscape composition. All levels are welcome; it's sure to be a fun and educational experience for all!

Music: Join Mrs. Rebecca Monson for a week of fun music activities and theatre games! We'll be using 5 gallon paint buckets and sticks to create rhythm patterns, introduction to reading music through a variety of activities. We will also spend time exploring our dramatic sides through fun and creative acting games. Your personally decorated bucket and sticks are yours to keep at the end of the class!

About the teachers:

Tory DeOrian, a Salesian alumni, now illustrates for Taco Bell and Snapchat, and is signed with one of the top children's literary agencies, among having worked as an intern for Disney in college.

Rebecca Monson is St. David School's music teacher and students' choir coordinator. She has experience in conducting student plays, musicals, and seasonal concerts.
