The days between Ash Wednesday and Easter are referred to as the season of Lent. These 40 days invite us to seek conversion—a change of heart—and repentance—a turning away from sin and seeking a closer relationship with God. For many people, Lent is a time to give up some pleasure or do some extra act of charity or personal discipline.
The traditional disciplines of Lent are prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Increased attention to prayer draws us closer to God. Fasting is a reminder that our physical needs are our highest value, and almsgiving is the act of sacrificing something of ourselves for the good of others.
As we continue to reflect on our theme this year of "Sharing our Gifts, Transforming our World," let us take these 40 days of Lent as a journey of growth, reflection, and renewal. Let us ask ourselves: How can we better recognize God's gifts and blessings to us? How can we share our gifts with others? How can we become more faithful followers of Christ? Then, at Easter, having completed our Lenten journey, we can rejoice in the new life given to us in Christ, a gift that has truly transformed our lives and our world.
Ash Wednesday on February 22, marks the beginning of the Lenten season for this year. We distributed ashes to the entire school community after a short prayer service.
