Dear Salesian Community,
We have some important news to share about upcoming changes in the leadership at Salesian College Preparatory. After more than 30 years of dedication and service to our students, faculty and community, Principal Marylou Flannery has made the decision to retire at the end of the 2022-23 academic year.
Mrs. Flannery epitomizes Salesian's commitment to academics, faith and family. She first joined our Salesian community in 1990 as a Social Science teacher and quickly made her mark as a beloved educator. She went on to serve as Assistant Principal for a decade, before becoming Principal in 2016. Throughout her academic tenure, Mrs. Flannery has lived the charism of our patron St. John Bosco, guided by the Salesian educational philosophy rooted in reason, religion and loving kindness.
For Mrs. Flannery, education has always been a matter of the heart. She is a steadfast champion of academic excellence and believes strongly in the importance of serving the social-emotional needs of students to help them reach their full potential. Over the course of her 30-plus years at Salesian, she has led important curriculum advances, overseen new and improved campus facilities, and contributed to a wide range of other vital school-wide programs and improvements in operations. Most recently, her thoughtful decision-making and leadership guided our entire school community safely and successfully through the Covid-19 pandemic.
Mrs. Flannery's shoes are nearly impossible to fill, but over the last year the Executive Committee of the Board has worked closely with her to put a leadership transition plan in place. As a result, we have selected Brian Swanson, currently Associate Principal for Student Life, to become Principal of Salesian College Preparatory effective July 1, 2023.
Reporting to Salesian President Stephen Pezzola, JD, Mr. Swanson brings more than 20 years of teaching and school administration experience to his new role. Since joining our organization in 2016, Mr. Swanson has led a number of innovative student initiatives, including spearheading on- and off-campus programs to support students and their families impacted by the academic and social upheavals created by the pandemic.
With the Board's commitment to ensuring consistency during this transition, Mr. Swanson's executive team will include long-time educator William (Billy) Heidenfeldt, Ph.D., who will continue his Salesian service as Associate Principal for Curriculum and Instruction.
On behalf of the Board of Directors and school administration, we extend our thanks and appreciation to Mrs. Flannery for her exemplary and enduring service, and congratulate Mr. Swanson on his new position. Thanks to their leadership, Salesian College Preparatory is poised for an even brighter future of preparing students for academic success, spiritual growth and community impact.
Thank you. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions.
