The Luis Chavez Yards recently underwent a long-overdue and significant improvement project. This effort was made possible through the generous support of XFit Training LLC, a local gym based in Pinole, California, whose donation directly enabled the work to move forward. Under the guidance of Joe Ruiz, Head Coach of the Salesian Pride Baseball Program, the renovation plan prioritized player safety above cosmetic enhancement. Several critical field issues were addressed including: 

Removal of Infield “Lips” and Outfield “Arcs”
Accumulated “lips” in the infield can create unpredictable, dangerous hops, while uneven “arcs” at the transition from infield to outfield pose risks for rolled ankles. Both issues were carefully corrected, resulting in smooth, consistent grading throughout the field. Fresh sod was installed to ensure quality playing conditions.

Base Realignment and Stabilization
All bases were precisely re-aligned and securely re-set to promote accuracy, fairness, and safety during play.

Pitching Mound Restoration
The pitching mound and the surrounding areas, where “lips” had also formed were fully re-graded, leveled, and resodded to restore proper mound structure and footing.

The Salesian Pride Baseball Program is especially proud to have collaborated with the seasoned professionals who maintain the Oakland Coliseum. Leo Valle, the Coliseum’s head groundskeeper with over 35 years of experience, led a team of three skilled crew members who executed the work with exceptional care and expertise. With these upgrades complete, the Salesian Pride Baseball Program eagerly anticipates a successful and safe Spring 2026 season.
