From April 12 through April 18, 2025, a group of 24 Salesian College Preparatory students embarked on a transformative journey that will continue to shape the legacy of our school. As part of the second annual Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Tour, students traveled to New Orleans, Atlanta, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., where they had the opportunity to visit seven renowned HBCUs.
Throughout the tour, students immersed themselves in the rich history, academic excellence, and cultural pride that define the HBCU experience. They engaged thoughtfully with current college students, asked insightful questions about campus life, and witnessed firsthand the vibrant energy of these institutions. Highlights included a visit to St. Peter Claver Catholic Church to celebrate Palm Sunday Mass; Witnessing a stepping performance by a Divine Nine fraternity, which offered them a glimpse into the rich cultural traditions and expressions of historically Black Greek-letter organizations; Walking the same grounds where Black educational pioneers laid the foundation for generations to come.
Beyond the campus visits, students explored significant landmarks in Black history, including the King Center, the gravesites of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and several historic sites along the National Mall.
The experience left a lasting impression - one of inspiration, connection, and vision. More than a college tour, the HBCU Tour journey is a celebration of Black excellence, identity, and possibility.
