Sixteen Salesian students, accompanied by Dr. William Heidenfeldt and Ms. Pauline Porter, made their way to Québec during spring break. The group conversed in French daily as they explored many neighborhoods of Montréal before visiting our sister school in Sherbrooke, Le Salesién. This spring adventure to Québec is the first student organized trip in over four years for Salesian.
The group spent three days in Montréal as they ventured up and down the Rue Saint-Laurent to explore bakeries, stores, delis, restaurants, and ice cream shops. They noticed the murals that dot every street corner and the very festive street life. On Easter Sunday, the group attended morning Mass at St. Jean-Baptiste, a gorgeous 1914 church done in the Baroque style. Later, they headed down to le Vieux Port for a photoshoot in front of the brand-new Roue de Montréal and the Bonsecours Market. They ended their weekend in the capital of Québec with dinner and a show at Modavie in le Vieux Montréal, where their tables were personally serenaded by local rock singers.
On Monday, the group set off for Sherbrooke to meet with their host families for the rest of the week. Navigating a schedule of classes all in French was both daunting and challenging for the students, but they handled it with ease as they were accompanied by their gracious and welcoming hosts. The final gathering of the entire group was at une cabane à sucre, a maple farm sugar shack. What an amazing educational experience for the students immersed in French language and culture for an entire week!
