Spirit of Service: The Blood Drive

A recent community blood drive reflected the spirit of service at the heart of Salesian values, bringing together 43 attendees in a shared effort to care for others. Rooted in a commitment to compassion and generosity, the event showed how simple acts of giving can make a meaningful difference in the lives of many.

On March 26, 24 donors successfully gave blood, contributing a total of 34 lifesaving units. Because each unit of whole blood can be separated into components that may help up to three patients, this effort has the potential to positively impact as many as 102 lives. This powerful outcome highlights service in action, meeting urgent needs and offering hope to those facing medical challenges.

The drive was also a memorable personal experience for many volunteers. One student shared that the event was both impactful and fun, especially because it allowed them to participate alongside friends. Helping with check-in and serving food to donors created a sense of community, while also offering hands-on opportunities to support others. At the same time, the experience carried important lessons. After seeing several donors feel faint, the student learned how to respond in those moments, using simple but effective care techniques like placing cold paper towels on them, lifting their legs, and ensuring they were properly nourished. These moments reinforced the deeper meaning of service: being present, attentive, and ready to help when it matters most.

Another inspiring highlight was the strong showing of new participants, with a remarkable 34 first-time donors signing up for the cause. Their involvement reflects a growing commitment to service and a willingness to step up for others. While the drive fell just short of its overall goal, the impact remains significant. Vitalant expressed gratitude for the dedication and success of the effort. With such strong participation and a clear embodiment of Salesian service, there is great hope that this initiative will continue to grow and become an annual tradition, strengthening the community’s shared commitment to serving others.
