Salesian students, parents, and faculty were in Rome on pilgrimage during our Easter Break. They attended the Easter Sunday Mass at St. Peter's Basilica, where Pope Francis' Easter Homily was delivered. After the Mass, Pope Francis shared the traditional "Urbi et Orbi" message and blessing. In both his homily and message, he reminded everyone present to anchor our hope in Christ. Drawing on the themes for the Jubilee Year of Hope, Pope Francis assured everyone present that "Hope does not disappoint" and that the risen Christ is the true source of our hope and joy.
After the blessing, Pope Francis rode around the piazza in the popemobile to greet the crowd. Our Salesian pilgrims were less than 10 feet away from him. It is truly a remarkable blessing to have been in the presence of the Pope, to hear his words of hope and encouragement, and to receive his apostolic blessing. In the days following Pope Francis' death, the Salesian students had the opportunity to pay their respects, joining the Church in prayer for this truly remarkable, humble, and holy servant of God.
We mourn the passing of Pope Francis, praying for the repose of his soul and giving thanks for his faithful leadership and witness to the Gospel.
