Athletic Training and Sports Medicine
Sports medicine at Salesian College Preparatory (SCP) is of vital importance for the well-being of our student athletes. Led by Salesian athletic trainer Kian McNair, MSAT, ATC, sports medicine at SCP works with all levels of our athletic teams, coaches, athletes, and parents to provide sports related medical care.
The mission of the SCP sports medicine program is to ensure the overall health of our athletes utilizing current research-based treatments and standards, set by SCP, the Tri-County Athletic League (TCAL), the North Coast Section (NCS), the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), and the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). The Salesian athletic trainer works in consultation with the students’ primary care physicians, orthopedic surgeons, and other medical providers.
Work Done in Sports Medicine includes but is not limited to:
- Injury prevention
- Injury evaluation
- Health, wellness, and injury education and counseling
- Injury treatment and rehabilitation
- Immediate first aid and emergency procedures
Students are introduced to the field of sports medicine with an emphasis on athletic training. Students will explore human anatomy and physiology as it relates to athletics, resulting in a thorough understanding of the musculoskeletal system. Current techniques employed in the prevention and treatment of athletic injuries will also be discussed. Additional topics that will be covered in the course include first aid, concussions, injury identification, and basic emergency care and procedures. Hands-on activities in the class will include preventive taping techniques and first aid application.
