Salesian Covid-19 Safety Plan
Remote and HyFlex Programs
We began our HyFlex Program on October 20, 2020. Students were on campus every Tuesday and Wednesday through November 24. We moved back to a Full Remote Schedule as of November 30 due to concerns about travel and large gatherings over Thanksgiving break. We will continue with a Full Remote School Program through the end of the calendar year. After Christmas break, we will resume our Full Remote Learning Program for two weeks. We hope to begin our HyFlex Program again on Thursday, January 21, 2021, as we bring some of our students back to campus. We will continue to evaluate and monitor all State and County health guidelines before restarting our HyFlex Program in the third week of January. Our goal would be to have students back on campus four days per week in February.
Re-Opening Plan
We have made preparations and set guidelines and rules that cover our Facilities, Access to our Campus, Social Distancing and such as outlined below:
Place - Facilities
Lunch/Snacks:
Cafe lunches and snacks will all be prepaid online and organized in a grab and go format to eliminate congregation in the cafe. Food will not be available to students unless ordered online in advance. No microwaves will be available in the cafe for student use at any time. Students should bring a bag lunch unless they wish to participate in the online cafe food service program. Uber, Lyft, pizza deliveries, etc., are NOT allowed on campus.
Students will be directed to go outside for break and lunch to areas that have been designated by grade level with social distancing markers. The areas will change based upon inclement weather when we have to utilize indoor facilities such as the Boys and Girls Club gym, Salesian gym, etc.
Water fountains are not available for use so students must bring a personal water bottle from home pre-filled with water.
Accessing Campus Facilities:
No one will be allowed onto campus without executing a waiver that among other items requires that the person pass a self-check screening for COVID symptoms. Ingress and egress routes will be clearly delineated and the students, faculty, and staff informed, with the goal of maximizing the use of all stairways and entrance doors which will optimize traffic flow.
Increasing Social Distancing
All lockers have been removed to maximize hallway space in the main school building, as well as allow for social distancing.
Certain classes will be held daily in the Boys and Girls club to reduce the number of students in the main school building at any given time.
Bathrooms will have limits on the number of students in them at any one time. Outside each restroom on campus we will post the maximum number that may use the restroom at any one time. possible for each bathroom. During break and lunch, this will be part of faculty and staff assistance responsibilities in designated areas. During class, teachers will have to limit and control the number of bathroom visits per block.
Desks/tables have been arranged in each classroom reflective of social distancing guidelines, and certain seats are designated as Please Choose Another Seat.
Outdoor tables and benches have designated seating with certain seats labeled ‘Please choose another seat’. Students will be assigned to various outdoor areas for break and lunch by grade level.
Water fountains are not available for use so students must bring a personal water bottle from home pre-filled with water.
Hall monitors will be assigned to keep traffic flowing through various hallways, as well as to maximize use of all stairwells throughout the main building during the school day.
An isolation room has been established off of the front office in case a student or staff member with symptoms needs to wait for transport.
The bell system will be disabled to allow for a staggered start and end of classes to minimize the number of students passing in the hallway at any given time.
Teacher will be encouraged to move classes outside whenever possible.
Signage indicating social distancing, hand washing, and wearing masks are apparent in all hallways, in various buildings, and in bathrooms.
Ventilation and Cleaning:
Teachers will be encouraged to keep all windows open as much as possible to maximize ventilation in the main school building.
Additional cleaning supplies (wipes, spray bottles with disinfectant , paper towels etc.) will be in every classroom, as well as hand sanitizer. Students are encouraged to bring in disinfectant wipes to wipe their desks down, or just use available classroom disinfectant supplies at any time.
We have ordered for every classroom and every space where students, faculty, or staff might gather for more than a few minutes, a medical grade H-13 HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air purifier). Additionally, plastic sneeze guards will be placed on teacher desks in these classrooms, providing more protection. Again, in all classrooms, windows will be open as much as possible on a given day.
An additional janitor will come on campus every evening after the regular daily cleaning has been completed. EPA approved list ’N’ cleaning materials for use against Covid 19 will be utilized throughout the campus. The extra janitor will use the EvaCleaning system (spray) on desks, door handles, cafe tables, chairs, gym bleachers, all bathrooms etc. to disinfect the campus every evening.
Cafe tables and chairs will be sprayed using the EvaCleaning system daily after break (when the Cafe is open for students to use).
Van Transportation
Vans will leave the middle seat and the front passenger seat empty, windows will be open, and drivers and students must properly wear masks during the entire ride. Hand sanitizer will be available in every van. Vans will be sprayed with disinfectant after every use and every evening.
People - All Students/Personnel
A Medical Assistant on staff has recently completed a certified Contact Tracing course and will be designated as a County Health Department contact person for the school. The Principal is also a member of the Covid Response Team at Salesian and is another contact person for CCHS.
Employees who are sick or exhibiting symptoms of Covid-19 are directed to stay home and follow CC Health Services Guidelines for returning to work after isolation or Quarantine (see SCP Covid-19 Rules and Regulations for Employees, 6/29/2020)
Students must avoid all physical contact with each other, including celebrations, handshakes, high-fives, etc.
Parents must check their student every day, and all Salesian employees and off campus coaches must also complete a self-check, and if any of the following symptoms (“Symptoms”) are present, the student or employee as the case may be must remain at home and not attend School until such time as the Symptoms have not been evident for at least 3 days:
- Fever above 100 degrees Fahrenheit (Touchless Thermometers available in front office) or chills
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- New loss of taste or smell
- Dry cough
- Congestion, sneezing or runny nose not related to a previous condition
- Sore throat
- Fatigue
- Muscle or body aches
- Headache
- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea
There will also be visual assessments by classroom teachers, staff, or admin, as well as a possible secondary temperature screening.
We will make available to all employees the opportunity to be tested for COVID 19 prior to students being allowed back in during HyFlex Phase 1 and every two months thereafter until further notice. Students will be encouraged to get tested for COVID 19 prior to coming onto campus and every two months thereafter until further notice.
Non-essential Visitors will be restricted from daily access to the campus.
All students as well as all faculty, staff and admin, must wear masks every day at all times anywhere on campus. Masks must be worn properly (per CDPH and CDC guidelines), must be clean (CDC and CDPH), and must be in compliance with required face covering guidelines (CCC Health Department).
Reduced Number of Students on Campus
Each student has been assigned to a Red or Gold group per their existing class schedule. The groups will be roughly equal in size taking into account many factors including van schedules, siblings, etc. No group will exceed sixty percent of the total student body.
In HyFlex Phase 1, the Red group will attend school two days per week (Tues./Wed.) when we begin, while the Gold group will remain at home learning over the web. The Gold group will attend school two days the next week (Tues./Wed.), with the Red group continuing their education remotely at home. It will continue in that pattern until we can safely expand the number of days on campus for each of the Red and Gold groups. Remote school will continue the remaining three days each week during HyFlex Phase 1.
The Contra Costa County Office of Education (9/17/20) Return to School Guidelines recommend 4-6 feet physical distancing between students within a classroom or instructional area. During each of our HyFlex Phases, all of our classrooms will have occupiable desks that are at least five feet apart assuming that each student in each group attends school on the days that they are allowed to be on campus. Several of our classrooms or instructional areas will have desks or assigned student space that is 6 feet or more apart (i.e., gym, cafe, drama room, etc.). We have ordered for every class and every space where students, faculty, or staff might gather for more than a few minutes, a medical grade H-13 HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air purifier). Additionally, plastic sneeze guards will be placed on teacher desks in these classrooms, providing more protection. In all classrooms, windows will be open as much as is possible on a given day.
Schedule for HyFlex Phase 1
Week 1:
RED on Campus / GOLD learning from home via live streaming on Zoom
Week 2:
GOLD on Campus / RED learning from home via live streaming on Zoom
** ASP, Study Skills, and 10th grade students will be encouraged to come EVERY Tuesday and Wednesday for additional resource support, and weekly teacher-to-student personal interaction to aid with learning.
Delivery of Education
Our faculty will have additional professional development in HyFlex Teaching and Learning to enable in class and over the web instruction at the same time. New laptops have been secured for the faculty as well as WebCams to facilitate a HyFlex teaching environment. Students who have any symptoms, or even suspected symptoms, will be able to stay home and receive the same educational program over the web that they would have received in person in the classroom.
Response Protocol
We will follow the response protocols as communicated on July 17 by the California Department of Public Health regarding measures to be taken when a community member has symptoms, is diagnosed with COVID-19, or has been in contact with someone who has been diagnosed. Per those protocols, “contact” is defined by a person who is less than 6 feet from a case (a person diagnosed with COVID 19) for more than 15 minutes. Our response to these scenarios is further informed by the work done by our infectious disease consultant who has given us additional guidelines for exposure scenarios. Specifically:
-
If a student or staff member has COVID-19 Symptoms (e.g., fever, cough, loss of taste or smell, difficulty breathing), he or she will be sent home and testing will be required. The school must be notified of the test results.
-
If a student or staff member tests positive for COVID-19, the individual and all of their contacts at school (cohort and affiliated faculty and staff) will be notified and must isolate and quarantine for 14 days from the test date. Testing for cohorts will be required. Space will be sanitized and the school community as well as the local health department will be notified.
-
If a student or staff member tests negative after experiencing symptoms, he or she may return to school no sooner than 24 hours hours after the last fever without the use of fever reducing medications. Test results must be presented to the school.
-
If a student or staff member has close contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case, the individual will be sent home and testing will be required. If the confirmed case is not a household member and the student or staff member in close contact’s test is negative, he or she will remain home for 10 days. If the confirmed case is a household member, the student or staff member will stay home for 10 days after the COVID-19 positive household member completes their isolation. Test results must be presented to the school.
The below table illustrates scenarios regarding exposure, symptoms, testing and notifications:
Scenario I
A student or staff member either exhibits COVID-19 symptoms, answers “yes” to a health screening question, or has a temperature of 100.00 or above
Immediate Actions
- Student/staff sent home
- Student/staff instructed to get tested
Communication
-
No action is needed

Remote School Student Expectations
Salesian faculty will teach as usual and expect that their students will access the classroom remotely via the Schoology platform. Students can be in relaxed dress code since they will be at home. They will, however, be visible to other students and their teacher through the Schoology platform. Students will be expected to conform to Zoom Etiquette guidelines posted on Schoology for all classes. Students should log in to Schoology daily and check that every course and group has the Zoom Conference link visible. They will then click on that Zoom Conference link for each block throughout the day to access daily presentations, lectures, discussions, and materials. All course instructions will be posted on Schoology.
Remote School Days will be standard school days in all other respects except that students will be accessing the classroom remotely whether at home or from another safe place. Students who do not log in during their scheduled class time will be marked as absent or tardy, depending on when they enter the Zoom Conference. Our platform allows teachers to know which students have accessed the class, and for how long they remained in attendance.
