Attendance

Attendance Policy

Daily attendance in each class is required. Students are responsible for any work missed due to their absence. Assignments or lessons missed must be made up in order to obtain course credit.

Students absent for five UNEXCUSED days, or for fifteen days for any reason, are ordinarily ineligible for semester credit.

A student/athlete must be in school for one-half of all classes in order to participate in any student or athletic activity that day. Non-attendance on a Friday forfeits participation in weekend school-related activities.

Students with perfect attendance are recognized at the end of the school year. Perfect attendance means students are never late or absent from a class (except for a school activity).

Parent/Guardians’ Responsibility for Reporting Absence

The parent/guardian must call the Attendance Office each time a student is absent. Calls should be made between 7:45 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. When a student returns to school after being absent, the student must bring a note with the student’s full name included in the note, signed by their parent/guardian, giving the reason for the absence, and noting the specific dates of absences. A medical form from a doctor attesting to treatment may also suffice when appropriate. Without this note, the student may not be allowed into class or may be required to serve a detention until the note is produced. Notes are required for both absences and tardiness, but do not necessarily excuse the absences or tardiness. The Dean of Students or the Principal may ask for further clarification regarding student absenteeism.

Unexcused Absence

The following are unexcused absences:

  • Truancy
  • Days of suspension
  • Failure to provide proper written authorization for absences.

Unexcused absences must be made up by serving detention: one class equals one detention.

Tardy Policy

Students tardy to school or to any class during the day must obtain an admit slip from the attendance office. All students late to school need a note from their parent/guardian on the same day which includes: date, student’s name, reason for the tardiness and parent’s or guardian’s signature over their printed name.

At the 1st – 5th tardy: After school detention for each tardy will be assigned (2:55 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.). Note: On any day that a student is tardy twice, the student will not be allowed to participate in or attend school related extra-curricular activities after school for that day, such as practices, games, or performances until after the detention is made up.

At the 5th tardy: A letter will be sent home to parents/guardians explaining further consequences.

At the 6th to 10th tardy: After school detention on the day of the tardiness will be assigned (2:55 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.); the student will not be allowed to participate in or attend school related extra-curricular activities after school for that day.

At the 11th to 15th tardy: After school detention on the day of the tardiness will be assigned (2:55 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.); the student will not be allowed to participate or attend school related extra-curricular activity for that day; and the student is required to complete one hour of community service at school as stipulated by the Dean of Students.

At the 16th tardy: Parents/Guardians will be contacted by the Dean of Students and informed of their student’s tardiness and of the following: Their student will be placed on disciplinary probation; assigned after school detention on the day of the tardiness (2:55 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.); will not be allowed to participate or attend school related extra-curricular activities after school while on probation; and required to complete community service as stipulated by the Dean of Students.

The Dean of Students oversees the day-to-day consequences for tardiness and any disciplinary actions.

School Passes: Medical / Tardy / Early Dismissal

Medical appointments should be scheduled outside school hours. If students leave school early for any reason, they must obtain a pass from the attendance office that will be presented to their teacher before leaving. If a note has not been provided, a parent/guardian must sign the student out before leaving.
