Poetry

Poetry Night
This is an evening of original poetry read by students. It is a long-standing tradition at Salesian and our way of celebrating April as National Poetry Month as designated by the National Endowment for the Arts.  The evening concludes with refreshments and conversation.  All are invited to attend.

Poetry Out Loud
This is a yearly competition organized by counties and sponsored by the Poetry Foundation of America and the National Endowment for the Arts.  It is open to all high schools in Contra Costa County.  The winner of the county competition goes on to the state final in Sacramento.  Students memorize and recite two poems by distinguished poets.  Competitors are judged on accuracy, voice, interpretation, and presence. Salesian usually has over one hundred students participate in the early rounds of Poetry Out Loud, and in recent years we have had students place in the top three of the county and the state finals.

Student Poetry
Enjoy the First Place winning poem, by junior Alicia Rosales, from the Richmond Writes! Contest for students sponsored by the Richmond Arts Council.

A Child's Place
When self-expression
Was a temporary tattoo
When lying and cheatin
Brought shame upon you.
When a consequence
Was a scary notion
No evil plots
Were put into motion.
When nationality
Was too big of a word to learn
And when sexuality
Was never a concern.
