Science

The science department endeavors to generate, in every student, the curiosity to ask the question why?

Our classes are designed to provide an environment that is conducive to developing an interest and appreciation for both the living and non-living ecosystems that surround every individual. Students are able to explore all aspects of the scientific world through a variety of courses surveying many topics. In every class, the scientific method guides the pupil in his or her pursuit of the answers to many scientific questions.

Department Goals

Students will develop:

  • Logical and creative thinking skills based upon the rationale of the scientific method.
  • An appreciation for the living and non-living world and the scientific principles that govern each.
  • An ability to express clearly, in written and oral formats, ideas concerning scientific principles.
  • An understanding of scientific truth as it pertains to honest, accurate data collection, analysis, and synthesis.
  • An ability to work and communicate with others to answer scientific questions and achieve scientific goals.
  • A respect and awareness for one’s own role in the world that surrounds him or her.

Using the model instituted by St. John Bosco, the science teachers will guide the students in the following ways:

Church

Teachers and students will conduct prayers or readings before class to set the focus for the class period.

School

The students will be made aware of science related issues through lecture, laboratory exercises, group work, current events, guest lectures, field trips, videos, and internet activities.

Playground

Department members will attend plays, games, poetry night, and other co-curricular activities in a sincere effort to be involved with the students.

Home

Teachers will further promote and reinforce the daily concepts and actions of the school environment by assigning homework, papers, projects, and other activities. Teachers will also have contact with parents as to the progress of their children through phone calls, meetings, e-mails, report card nights, and by mailing grades.
