An AP or Advanced Placement Course indicates that the class has been designed and approved by the College Board, a non-profit educational testing institution.
The AP curriculum, text, supplementary materials, and instructor are approved by the College Board following rigid guidelines. These courses help high school students acquire the skills necessary to be successful in college coursework. AP courses challenge bright students and help them stand out in the college admissions process. Students in AP courses take a national exam in May based on the course contents. Passage of this exam will result in college credit at the university level. A student taking an AP course receives a weighted grade point for the course.
Honors courses challenge students in a variety of disciplines that are not necessarily related to a national exam in May. These courses reflect a more rigorous curriculum, advanced reading materials, and demand additional time and commitment on the part of students. Honors courses also result in a weighted grade point and stand out in the college admissions process.
Students wishing to take AP or Honors courses at Salesian High School must complete an application form in the spring, and meet GPA requirements to be admitted to these classes.
