Academic Success Program

The Academic Success Program at Salesian High School is a special admissions designation for ninth grade students. Students are admitted to Salesian High School in the Academic Success Program based on a variety of factors:

IEPS and/or recognized learning disabilities, low tests scores on the HSPT Entrance Test, low IOWA or Stars test scores, ELL issues, teacher and/or counselor recommendations from Middle or Elementary school, medical reasons, or below average performance in summer school English or Math.

Ninth grade students enrolled in the Academic Success Program will begin their preparation for high school in the summer prior to ninth grade. The summer program consists of a Reading Success course with an accelerated component based on an initial diagnostic evaluation. The Reading Success course continues in the fall in addition to the regular ninth grade English class. These students will not take a foreign language (Spanish or French) until their sophomore year, giving them ample opportunity to complete their college language requirement. With additional resources, support, and course work, the Academic Success students will expand their confidence and motivation to handle the rigors of a high school college prep curriculum and achieve academic success.

Goals of the Academic Success Program:

  1. Assist incoming ninth grade students with reading difficulties and raise individual reading scores
  2. Provide study skills training that will insure academic success
  3. Provide individualized and group tutoring opportunities outside of the regular classroom
  4. Provide resource specialist assistance with accommodations and curriculum modification if necessary
  5. Coordinate communication on a regular basis between the Guidance Department, student, parents and teachers to help monitor student progress
  6. Provide general assistance with the transition to high school in terms of personal counseling if necessary
